Should everything be up for debate?
At Doha Debates, we believe that debate can help solve some of the world's most challenging problems. But are there limits to what free speech and debate can accomplish?
Social media has allowed more people to connect and share their perspectives than ever before. That has led to an immense amount of learning and progress-but it's also led to an uptick in hate speech and misinformation, online and IRL. Today, anyone can have a platform-but should they? Is everything up for debate, or should some things be out of bounds?
Jacob Mchangama, founder and executive director of The Future of Free Speech think tank, argues that free speech and open debate are the only ways to build and secure open and tolerant societies. He thinks we should all be able to speak our minds, and says that engaging with people and perspectives we disagree with can help sharpen our own opinions or help us learn something new. Author and journalist David Stubbs says that unlimited free speech tends to favor extreme voices and that certain ideas, like climate denial, don’t deserve a platform and are “just plain wrong.” Watch Doha Debates Podcast as these experts discuss the limits of debate and the future of free speech.

Going Green: Can the global south develop without fossil fuel?
Переглядів 11 тис.Місяць тому
Climate anxieties-and global temperatures-are on the rise. According to the United Nations, if the planet warms by 1.5 degrees Celsius, we’ll be facing irreversible climate damage. To stop that increase, we need to reach net zero emissions by 2050. Reaching such an ambitious goal means changing a lot of our behaviors, including cutting back on our use of fossil fuels. But should everyone, and e...

Is obesity a choice?

While he concedes that genetic and env...

The debate host constantly expressed her biases and pushed her own agenda. Also, what debate has a voting system and is centered around social media and opinions on there? This is a horrible way to discuss the serious and tragic problem of refugees seeking help. The debate host does not seem to really care to address the concerns and is more focused on how many social media reactions they get.

This moderator, Ms. Ghida Fakhry, was a disgrace as a host. She was rude, hostile, aggressive, distespectful and totally bias when it came to Douglas Murray. She did not behave that way with the other guests. Repeatedly, she asked questions but never let him answer and even when he was given a brief moment to respond she constantly talked over him. The audience seemed to be cherry-picked, clapping at her attempts to score points, making for an overall one-sided stance on this issue. This was a sham of a debate in reality and the first thing that needs to change for future Duha debates, in my view, is a host that is an unbiased facilater for the panel guests not a strongly politicised agitater who does not care to listen to other points of view.

The host is incredibly biased, you can feel the passion and hurt as she argued with Douglas Murray, who she attempts to position as uncaring which is simply untrue. He presented very real questions for us to posit about 'mercy' and 'justice', and that is the responsibility of the global community to look after refugees. Why is she so determined to make him look bad with things hes never said?

I think it is remarkable that this debate is taking place in Qatar, and it is encouraging to see such a vital discussion on the global refugee crisis being addressed in an open and unprejudiced manner. This kind of discourse is essential for fostering understanding and finding solutions. However, I couldn't help but notice that the host exhibited clear biases, which is unfortunate in a debate of this significance. All the panelists brought valuable perspectives to the table, each presenting both commendable and questionable points. The diversity of opinions is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the refugee crisis. As a host nation, we must undoubtedly put in more effort to help refugees integrate into our society. This, however, is a two-way street. The newcomers also bear the responsibility to actively participate in and embrace their new communities. One point that stood out to me was the discussion around clashing ideologies, which seemed to be narrowly focused on the wearing of the Hijab in the UK. The issue of integration extends far beyond this. Our collective failure to facilitate integration, coupled with a lack of willingness from some arriving cultures, has led to the formation of insular communities. These communities sometimes hold ideologies that are at odds with the values of their new home, such as advocating for Sharia Law. Sharia Law is fundamentally incompatible with the culture and beliefs of a free society. It often contradicts principles of equality, freedom, and individual rights, which are cornerstones of modern democratic societies. This clash is not a minor issue; it represents a significant challenge in creating a cohesive and unified community. While the majority of refugees are peaceful and seek a better life, there is a concerning undercurrent of attempts to introduce cultural elements that may not align with the host country’s values. This includes efforts to undermine and remove freedoms from marginalized groups, like the LGBTQ+ community. Ensuring that the principles of freedom and equality are upheld is essential for maintaining the integrity of our society. Moreover, I felt that the debate inadequately addressed women’s rights. This is a critical aspect that cannot be overlooked. Ensuring that women’s rights are upheld and respected should be a fundamental part of the integration process. It is essential to create an environment where all individuals, regardless of gender, can thrive and contribute to society. In conclusion, while the debate was a significant step forward, it is clear that there are deeper, more complex issues that need to be addressed. The responsibility for successful integration lies with both the host nations and the refugees. Open, unbiased dialogue is the key to finding sustainable solutions that respect and uphold the values of all involved. It is vital to address the incompatibility of certain ideologies, like Sharia Law, with the principles of a free society, and ensure that integration efforts are inclusive and respectful of fundamental human rights.

I am sick and tired of the conflation between the holocaust and what is going on in Syria or Afghanistan. The victims of the holocaust were Europeans suffering the worst massacre in human history. How is that even similar to what's going on in Syria and Afghanistan? These people do not share our culture and we do not owe them a living. Why doesn't Qatar open their borders? Why is it Europe and America which must face this invasion? We do not want them here and, believe me, indigenous Europeans are getting pissed off. Moreover, Marc Lamont Hill is not even close to being an intellectual equal to Douglas Murray.

To me a burqa means that the person wearing it has a religious & political predisposition. A religious bigot and apologist that are steadfast in their beliefs come what will. I have no idea why I should respect that. I accept that if you will, but I will not respect that. And Qatar, an authoritarian monarchy, hosting a dialogue about free speech is an audacity in itself. Let's put it to the test. Open a hooters in Qatar and see how that goes.

well what if people living in the country are happy with the rulers there? almost no taxes, low crime rates, good morals, values and you probably have no clue perhaps, you're only as free in some of your western countries as much as in an "authoritarian monarchy" like qatar its just your insignificance with all due respect that helps you believe that you actually have true freedom, become a bit famous and criticize their war in ukraine and their relations with israel very soon you'll understand that you're not totally free anywhere. As far as criticizing rulers comes into play yeah perhaps you can do that in your countries but here it doesn't cross our minds coz the country's running smoothly.. and btw burqa is purely for modesty and its an abrahamic tradition not just muslim, mary (pbuh) even in the churches is always covered and thats modesty, qatar is a modest country unlike your places where you have restaurants like hooters literally selling women's bodies for the sole cause of enticing men.
